Albatross
Albatross
“Wisdom” is the oldest living known bird. A Layson’s albatross, she was first banded by biologist Chandler Robbins in 1956, on Midway Island - along with thousands of other albatrosses. At the time, she was already older than 5 years old, which means Wisdom is at least 68 — but could easily be older. This remarkable albatross is still reproducing, and is believed to have laid nearly 40 eggs over the course of her life. She has probably flown more than 3 million miles over the past six decades — far enough to fly to the moon and back six times.
Robbins returned to Midway in 2002, and was astonished to find the same bird he had tagged, 46 years earlier. In 2011, Wisdom survived a tsunami that crashed into Midway Atoll and killed thousands of birds.
